We had such a fun Athletics morning on Tuesday. The children took part in lots of different activities such as long jump, egg and spoon races, obstacle courses, 3 legged races, velcro vest shotput, sack races and played Octopus.

Congratulations to James for being awarded the Gardener of the week. He was given some special beans to take home and plant. We will look out for the beanstalk! A photo of Eva getting ready to do some gardening in our school garden.

FUNKY JUNKY

Over the last few weeks we have been busy with our topic 'Funky Junky'. We made posters describing how to look after Planet earth. We also created posters with more ideas of what we can do to make a difference to keep our earth green. We discussed the 3r's recycle, reduce and reuse.
We worked in groups to design games and activities for our playground using rocks and pinecones. We started painting rocks to make alphabet stones and tic tac toe. Some groups are looking at creating bird feeders out of pinecones.

We finished our Junior Funky Junky day on Friday by playing a mixture of old fashioned and modern day games. We are beginning to look at creating and making new games for our playground out of recycled materials!

Kindness week

Last week for kindness week we decided it would be really kind to thank someone in our school who does amazing work for us and we don't often see her to say thank-you.. our amazing cleaner Mrs Louden. The children described her as being like a fairy who comes in without us seeing her and does an amazing job making our classroom shiny and clean.

Today we invited Mrs Louden into our classroom to present her with our thank-you book we made full of letters. Some letters are attached to read. She was so surprised and happy receiving our book.

'Dear Mrs Louden,
We appreciate you cleaning our classroom. You should take a day off. You are a star.
From Alexie'
'Dear Mrs Louden,

Kindness week

Last week we decided to make bookmarks for kindness week to give to the local library. Each time a person is issued with a book they could be presented with a free bookmark created by Kawakawa.

Here are some lovely messages from the library staff about our bookmarks.

Our kindness tree is beginning to bloom with kind actions the students are showing towards others. Keep up the great work:)

On Friday we went on a Funky Junk Junior school trip! We were very lucky the rain held off. The children did so well on the long walk with strong winds. We learnt so much at The Waitaki Recycling Centre and at the Community gardens. Thank-you so much to our amazing parents who helped! It was a great way to start our inquiry topic.

INQUIRY

Our inquiry for this term is "Funky Junk"- how can we turn our playground into our sixth learning space? We are looking at recycling, upcycling and using "waste" items to make games and activities. We will be making things like- bird feeders, bird baths, stilts, can phones, windchimes etc

Can you donate anything- please speak to the Junior School teachers. Here are some ideas to inspire you

THIS FRIDAY WE ARE HAVING A "FUNKY JUNK" DAY. WE ARE GOING TO THE RECYCLING CENTRE IN THE MORNING, HAVING LUNCH IN THE PUBLIC GARDENS AND PLAYING A VARIETY OF GAMES IN THE AFTERNOON. IF YOU CAN HELP BY WALKING WITH US OR  HELPING TO RUN A GAME, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!

Sunday 19 October 2014

We thought about what we could do to be a kind friend for our Writing this morning. The children thought of wonderful ideas such as 'have a sort out of my old clothes and toys and donate them to a charity shop', smile at others, help a friend in the playground and many more ideas.

We look forward to starting our kindness tree tomorrow and watching it bloom with kind acts we do!
